Inspection

Concrete inspections should ideally be undertaken from within touching distance although this is not always possible due to the cost of providing access, site logistics and the nature of the deterioration and size of the structure.

The inspection should be undertaken by experienced personnel and should include observations of the following defects:-

  • Areas of spalled, delaminated concrete and exposed reinforcement

  • Cracking with details of location, orientation, width, length, any tapering, age ie are edges clean or weathered

  • Water penetration and staining

  • Areas of honeycombing and/or grout loss

  • Rust staining (either pyrites or due to corrosion of the reinforcement)

  • Joint type and condition

  • Scaling
